Safeway Launches Hurricane Relief in Stores

Safeway Launches Hurricane Relief in Stores

Safeway Foundation Gives $100,000 to Red Cross as Company Raises Money in Stores and Sends 10,000 American Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Kits to the Gulf Coast

PLEASANTON, Calif., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The devastation of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast has triggered the largest disaster relief effort in U.S. history. Throughout North America, millions of people are reaching out to the hurricane survivors to offer financial and material support.

Safeway announced today that it has launched a company-wide fundraiser to benefit hurricane survivors. The Safeway Foundation has delivered an initial check for $100,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and will match employee contributions to the relief organization. In addition, the company will donate 10,000 American Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Kits that contain blankets, flashlights, first-aid supplies and other necessities.

Each of the 17,000 check stands at the company's 1,802 stores in the U.S. and Canada also will be used to collect donations for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

"People in the affected areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are in desperate need of clean water, safe shelter and the basic necessities of life. It is crucial that we step in to help provide for their needs," said Larree Renda, Executive Vice President. "Safeway's Tom Thumb and Randalls stores in Texas already are providing food, water and other supplies to evacuee shelters. The need is staggering, but can be met if everyone gets involved."

The company's Texas stores began collecting donations on Tuesday, August 30 with the cooperation of local radio and television stations. Houston is currently housing thousands of evacuees from the afflicted areas, including an estimated 25,000 people taken from the New Orleans Superdome to the Houston Astrodome. Randalls and Tom Thumb stores and local broadcast partners are asking the public to contribute to the "Neighbors in Need" program at Randalls stores and the "Spirit of Texas Hurricane Relief Effort" at Tom Thumb stores.

In early 2005, Safeway conducted a similar fundraising effort to help the survivors of the tsunami disaster in South Asia. That campaign raised $3.5 million.

Meijer Responds to International Aid Need for Food

Meijer Responds to International Aid Need for Food

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Three semi-trucks loaded with ready-to-eat food, ready-to-feed baby formula in bottles, bottled water and juice will leave the Cascade Meijer store and Meijer Lansing distribution center tonight. The trucks are headed for Rolling Fork, Miss., located on Route 61 about 1 hour from the Louisiana border. A double team of drivers will allow the trucks to drive straight through on a 900-mile, a 16-18-hour trip with hopes of arriving midday tomorrow.

The trucks are bound for the International Aid hub on Route 61 where they will be unloaded to smaller trucks that will go directly into the most needy areas of Mississippi. "We have a temporary operation center staffed with a five-person International Aid relief and assessment team. We are working in conjunction with local church volunteers. Our efforts are based in a church parking lot and auditorium where people can come to get food and supplies and, if necessary, use the site for housing," said Myles Fish, president, International Aid. "From that site, we operate in conjunction with the military and local police to be escorted into the areas where direct food and supply distribution can begin."

The Meijer truck loads include about 70 donated pallets of food and drinks with a range of 60-150 cases per pallet, depending on product size. The smallest items include products like granola bars, cheese snack packs and baby food. All the products are individual in portion, based on International Aid's assessment of the need to distribute mass quantities of food to lines of individuals, some of whom have been waiting for hours.

"We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Meijer. Today, as our relief teams distributed supplies, the number-one requests were water, drinks and basic, ready-to-eat food. Meijer is donating exactly what the people need. Our transportation fleet was at capacity, so without Meijer's generous transportation, there is no way we could have delivered these much needed products this quickly."

Meijer is a Michigan-based, family-owned and operated grocery and general merchandise supercenter retailer that operates 171 stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. Information about Meijer can be found at http://www.meijer.com/.

The Company has 37 stores in the impacted areas that are currently closed, including 33 stores in Louisiana, four in Mississippi.

While some of the temporarily closed stores will be able to re-open after utilities are restored to affected areas, there are a number of stores that have sustained significant physical damage and will be impacted for a longer period of time. The Company maintains insurance coverage for windstorm, property and flood damage and business interruption, and expects to be adequately covered for losses due to the hurricane, although it is difficult to predict the amount or timing of any insurance recoveries at this time.

Winn-Dixie is aiding the area's recovery efforts by working with local authorities and agencies to transfer non-perishable items to where they are most needed. Through the Company's Neighbor Helping Neighbor program, Winn- Dixie stores are accepting voluntary donations from customers to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Peter Lynch, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our Associates, customers and neighbors in the affected communities are in our hearts and prayers. At this time, Winn-Dixie's management is focused on restoring store operations and assisting with hurricane relief efforts. Marsh also is donating supplies of non- perishable items to the American Red Cross to assist with the relief efforts. This is a collaborative effort with Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts and the radio station Q-95. On Thursday, September 8, 2005, a live auction will be held on Q-95's nationally syndicated "Bob and Tom Show" to raise funds for the American Red Cross. This auction will include one-of-a-kind collectible items gathered and created specifically for this cause. Additionally, donation canisters will be available at Village Pantry convenience stores, LoBill Food Stores and O'Malia Food Markets, which are separate divisions of the Marsh supermarket chain.

"All Americans feel a deep sense of loss in the aftermath of this horrendous tragedy," said Don E. Marsh, chairman and CEO of Marsh Supermarkets. "While our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families and friends of the victims, we encourage our patrons to join in this tangible demonstration of our sympathy and desire to help. We also want to provide support for the hundreds of service workers and volunteers who are assisting in the rescue and cleanup efforts."

H-E-B Chairman and CEO Earns Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year Award

H-E-B Chairman and CEO Earns Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year Award

DALLAS, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Friends of Texas Public Schools has named Charles Butt, Chairman and CEO of H.E. Butt Grocery Company, the first recipient of its Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year Award for his tireless commitment to, and support of, public education in Texas.

Colleen Barrett, President of Southwest Airlines, presented the award to Mr. Butt at a special reception they hosted on behalf of Friends of Texas Public Schools at their headquarters in Dallas.

The Friend of the Year Award was founded to recognize an individual who understands that true motivation to excel cannot be found in harsh criticism and accusations of failure. "Mr. Butt carries the sense of optimism we believe is sorely lacking in our society today, especially in regard to our public schools," says Scott Milder, President and cofounder of Friends.

"We are plagued with the myth that Texas public schools are some sort of disaster," said Mr. Butt upon accepting his award. "Ill-informed, irresponsible comments like this upset us all and it's exciting to see you (Friends) speak out on the schools' behalf. I respect greatly your accepting the challenge of showing Texas that education is an investment, not a cost, that our schools represent a resource, a strength, an opportunity -- not a burden."

While criticism of our public schools is plentiful, celebration of their success is largely nonexistent, Milder added. "The work Mr. Butt and H-E-B do to celebrate public education in Texas through their Excellence in Education Program and others reflects the positive energy we believe is so desperately needed in our public schools."

Texans have a right to know that, in spite of the many challenges they face, our public schools are achieving more today than ever in their history. The popular myth of widespread failure is just that -- a myth. "Talk of failure and reform has eroded the public's confidence in a system with exponentially more successes than failures," Milder says. "Unfortunately, reality is nothing more than a person's perception of it."

Our mission at Friends is to boost the public's confidence in public schools by celebrating their success and working together to foster continual improvement. With increased confidence we believe will follow an increase in parental and community involvement, as well as proper and sufficient funding. Celebrating success and continual improvement cannot be mutually exclusive.

Whole Foods Market Provides Update on Louisiana and Florida Stores Affected By Hurricane Katrina

Whole Foods Market Provides Update on Louisiana and Florida Stores Affected By Hurricane Katrina

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ:WFMI) today provided an update on the current state of its stores in Louisiana and Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While there has been property damage and product loss, the Company is pleased to report that so far it is not aware of any injuries to its team members. The Company estimates a sales impact on the fourth quarter, which began July 4, 2005 and ends September 25, 2005, in the range of $5 million to $6 million.

"We are working to identify the immediate and long-term needs of our team members impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Our efforts thus far include the establishment of a special internal relief fund supported by donations from fellow team members and a guaranteed job at another store location," said John Mackey, Whole Foods Market chairman and CEO. "In addition, our stores across the country have made it easy for shoppers wishing to support the relief efforts to simply add a donation to their purchase which will go directly to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. We will make a matching donation for in-store customer donations up to a total of $1 million."

The Company operates five stores in South Florida, which all closed early on Thursday, August 25, 2005 in preparation of Katrina's landfall. Only two stores remained closed on Friday. One of which re-opened on Saturday and the other re-opened on Sunday, August 28, 2005. While there was some store product loss, there was no store or regional office property damage.

The Company operates three stores in Louisiana located in New Orleans, Metairie, and Baton Rouge. The New Orleans and Metairie stores closed late on Saturday, August 27, 2005, while the Baton Rouge store closed late on Sunday. The Baton Rouge store re-opened on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, with only minor product loss due to a loss of power and no property damage reported. The potential re-opening of the New Orleans and Metairie stores is unknown at this time. The Company has not been able to access those stores and will not be able to do so until those areas are cleared for re-entry which may take several weeks. Based on the best information the Company has available, however, it is assumed that both stores have suffered severe wind and water damage resulting in significant structural damage as well as a complete loss of inventory.

The Company has property, flood, casualty, and business interruption insurance coverage and has just started the process of working with its insurer to assess damages, a process that could take several months in the case of the New Orleans and Metairie stores. The Company expects to record a one time charge in the fourth quarter for estimated uninsured losses. In the event that either or both of those stores are considered to be a total loss, the Company's current intention is to rebuild and reopen those stores as quickly as possible.

About Whole Foods Market: Founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods Market(R) is a Fortune 500 company and the largest natural and organic foods retailer. The Company had sales of $3.9 billion in fiscal year 2004 and currently has 171 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The following constitutes a "Safe Harbor" statement under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Except for the historical information contained herein, the matters discussed in this press release are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, which could cause our actual results to differ materially from those described in the forward looking statements. These risks include but are not limited to general business conditions, the timely development and opening of new stores, the impact of competition, and other risks detailed from time to time in the Company's SEC reports, including the report on Form 10-K/A Amendment No. 2 for the fiscal year ended September 26, 2004. The Company does not undertake any obligation to update forward-looking statements.
